ABSTRACT for project 1: Languge acceptance through a new method
By: Gloria Alafe
In my essay I use Suresh Canagarajah's introduction, Translingual Practice, as a lens for my secondary text of Deborah A. Miranda's essay in Bad Indians in order to argue that by coming to terms that since languages are still at war today because there is always a need for one language to be dominant and considered standard. I argue that other than teachers focusing on grammar, context, or in Canagarajah’s concept the fluidity of translingual practice that they should consider establishing a way in which students can safely express themselves. I suggest journaling, as Deborah A. Miranda does in her essay as a way for individuals to engage in codemeshing and discover themselves through this medium of writing. After examining Canagarajah’s text in relation to Miranda’s essay I forward his idea of translingual practice, however I promote a need to develop the sub-category, codemeshing, in order to adequately codemesh. Furthermore, I offer explicit examples to support my argument by elaborating on Miranda’s journey to obtaining her native language. Overall, I propose that coming to terms with one’s identity in order to fully engage in translingual practices may need a complete level of competence and that understanding that languages may still have inequality between one another, hence exposing students to journaling can be a safe way of implementing Canagarajah’s concept.
