Abstract for Project 3 Analysis: Language Differences within Groups: Going beyond Code meshing
By: Gloria ALafe
In my essay I use Vershawn A. Young's essay, "Should Writers Use They Own English," as a secondary argumentative text to analyze my Poem, "Palavras Ocas (Hollow Words),". I argue that there are racial and language discrimination that need to be addressed before the cry for code meshing and code switching can be answered. I suggest that code switching and meshing should and can be used interchangeably depending on who an individual is speaking because one person may have more linguistic competence about one language than another individual. I suggest that by being more realistic about who can code mesh and code switch would be a start to alleviating some of these racial discriminations. After examining my text and Miranda's text in relation to Young's argument that "we all using a common language" (Young, 63) I offer a program in which we could better explain what he means by sharing a common language. I also suggest that his statement may be a little misleading because he does not explicitly describe how everyone is using a common language. Overall, I propose that promoting cultural meshing as well as code switching and meshing can be more effective at targeting the grand population of the students.
